Meet the Characters

Meet the main characters of FedTime and the roles they play in a story that starts with sudden change and grows into a fight of a lifetime that reshapes everything.

Malik Reynolds is the heart of FedTime. A career federal employee, Malik has spent years building a stable life through discipline, balance, and producing high quality work inside a system he knows well. He understands how things operate, what is expected of him, and how to move through his days with purpose and control.

When the pandemic disrupts the world around him, Malik experiences an unexpected shift. Distance from the office brings clarity, peace, and a version of life he did not realize was possible. For the first time, work fits into his life instead of consuming it.

That balance does not last.

As the story progresses, Malik is forced to confront the loss of what he gained and the personal cost of decisions made far beyond his control. FedTime follows Malik as he moves from endurance to awareness, and ultimately toward a choice that will define how far he is willing to go to protect the life he fought to build.

Vanessa Smith is Malik’s love and emotional anchor. Closest to him during his moments of clarity and struggle, Vanessa sees the changes in Malik before he fully names them himself. She represents steadiness outside of institutions, offering perspective, honesty, and grounding as Malik confronts forces that threaten the balance he found.

Her relationship with Malik is built on presence and unconditional love. As Malik is tested, Vanessa becomes a constant reference point, reminding him of who he is beyond his job and what is worth protecting when everything else feels uncertain.

Katie Dawson is a journalist whose path intersects with Malik’s at a critical moment. Drawn to the quiet truths behind official narratives, she recognizes the significance of what Malik is experiencing and understands the power of documenting it.

Katie’s role is shaped by her proximity to Malik’s story. She listens, observes, and asks the questions that bring visibility to what would otherwise remain unseen. Through her work, Malik’s experience becomes part of a larger record, reinforcing that some stories matter precisely because they are lived quietly.

Reuben Nash is the lawyer who helps Malik give shape to his growing resolve. Where Malik carries the lived experience, Reuben understands how to navigate systems designed to resist challenge. He brings structure, language, and strategy to a fight Malik never intended to enter.

Reuben’s role in FedTime is directly tied to Malik’s turning point. He helps transform Malik’s personal struggle into something actionable, grounding emotion in reality and guiding Malik through the consequences of deciding not to stay silent.
